Was the Golden Bear Challenging Tiger?

Tiger Woods has long made it known he wants to break Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 majors won.  Having captured his 14th in 2008, Tiger’s drive to catch the Golden Bear stalled last year when he failed to win one, and is on indefinite hold due to his off-course issues.

Nicklaus has long made it known he expects Tiger to break his mark.  But while some athletes do whatever they can to hold on to their records, Nicklaus seems to be urging Tiger on, as evidenced by his words on Wednesday.

“It would surprise me if he didn’t [play],” Nicklaus said Wednesday.  “I can’t imagine in a  hundred years he is going to miss Augusta.”

Though seemingly innocent, I sense Nicklaus was challenging Tiger to move forward with his life and his pursuit of golf’s greatest mark.  His statement implies it would be ridiculous for Tiger to skip the tournament he loves so much.  And with the approval of the legendary Golden Bear, Tiger should now feel comfortable to return.

I hope he does.

THERE IT IS!

  1. I’d say that was a subtle hint from Jack to get Tiger to move on with his life as the sport of golf needs him.

  2. Tiger Woods sure does talk a great game in the press conference regarding becoming much more respectful to the game of golf, although his actions spoke much louder than his words when he missed the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Tiger might have created a lot of good will by simply doing this particular tournament. Arnie would certainly have done nearly anything which he could have that can help present Tiger in the best light, however on the other hand Tiger makes a decision to write off one of the legends of the sport to do his individual thing. All the best at the Masters, Mr Woods. Congratulations to Ernie Els, and also I am hoping you will do very well in Augusta.
