There’s nothing that gets a team energized after a losing season like bringing in a head coach who has failed somewhere else. Seriously, are the Buffalo Bills trying to drive their fans away?
In 1998, they hired Wade Phillips, who was 16-16 with a playoff loss with the Broncos before getting fired. He lasted three seasons and lost both his playoff games.
In 2006, they hired Dick Jauron, who had one winning season with a playoff loss in five years with the Bears before getting fired. He made it to a fourth season but never came close to the postseason.
In 2010, they bring in Chan Gailey, who was 18-14 with two playoff losses in two years with the Cowboys. My guess is he’ll eventually be fired without winning a playoff game.
I’ll never understand the fascination some teams have with hiring somebody just because they had been a head coach for another team. If they didn’t win previously, why would you expect them to win now? If they were so good, how come no other team rushed to snap them up before now?
I’d rather take a chance on an unproven commodity than go with somebody I know will fail again. But that’s just me.
THERE IT IS!
